D.L. Evans Bank WWAMI Endowment Fund for University of Idaho

D.L. Evans Bank announced a $25,000 donation to the WWAMI Medical Education Program at the University of Idaho (Idaho WWAMI), becoming the first bank in Idaho WWAMI’s 48-year history to establish an endowment for medical student scholarships.

“We believe that giving back to our communities and supporting education through our service areas will have a long-term positive impact in our communities,” John V. Evans, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer of D.L. Evans Bank said. “By partnering with the University of Idaho and creating the D.L. Evans Bank WWAMI Idaho Scholarship Endowment, we are furthering our goal to support education and the communities we serve.”

Idaho WWAMI is part of a five-state partnership between the University of Washington School of Medicine and Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI). The University of Idaho has helped educate future physicians in the Idaho WWAMI program since its inception in 1972 and provides opportunities for students, all Idahoans, to specialize in rural medicine.

The need for doctors in Idaho is urgent. According to the United Health Foundation, Idaho ranks 50th for practicing physicians per capita. Compounding this, Idaho has been the fastest-growing state for three years running, and many of Idaho’s health care professionals are nearing retirement. Idaho WWAMI is a vital part of the state’s physician pipeline.

“Idaho WWAMI students want to stay in Idaho and serve in an area of medicine that is needed most, but medical school debt can influence graduates’ decisions to practice in a lucrative specialty and location,” Jeff Seegmiller, Assistant Dean and Director of Idaho WWAMI said. “One of the best ways to help our medical students come back and practice in Idaho is to offset the financial burden of becoming a physician. The D.L. Evans Bank WWAMI Idaho Scholarship Endowment helps make our students’ dreams a reality and shows an extraordinary investment in Idaho.”

Three generations of the Evans family have attended and graduated from the University of Idaho. “Supporting the state’s land-grant institution is a great privilege for D.L. Evans Bank.” said John V. Evans, Jr. “The fact that we can provide scholarships to Idaho-based students that are working hard to become doctors makes the endowment even more meaningful.”

Beginning in fall 2021, the $25,000 endowment will distribute an annual scholarship each year.
