The holidays inspire giving—but unfortunately, scammers take advantage of generosity by posing as fake charities. Protect your donations with these tips:

Know the Warning Signs:

• High-pressure tactics urging you to “donate now.”

• Requests for donations via gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or other non-traditional payment methods.

• Unfamiliar organizations or names that sound similar to real charities.

How to Give Safely:

• Research charities before giving. Use trusted sites like Charity Navigator or the BBB Wise Giving Alliance.

• Donate directly through the charity’s official website—never through links in unsolicited emails, texts, or social media messages.

• Ask for written information about the charity’s mission and how your donation will be used.

• Ask for examples. If a charity is helping the homeless, ask where and how the funds are being used.
