Stay Cool and Cautious: Spotting Scammers in the Summer Job Market

Scammers are like pesky summer mosquitoes—they're everywhere, and they can be hard to spot. They often advertise fake jobs and business opportunities online, using job sites and social media platforms to lure unsuspecting job seekers. Here are some tips from the Federal Trade Commission to help you stay scam-free this summer:

Avoid Upfront Payments:

Just as you wouldn't pay for a day at the beach before you arrive, you shouldn't pay for a job before you start. Legitimate employers, including government agencies, will never ask for payment to secure a job. If someone requests money upfront, it's a clear sign of a scam. Also, be wary of anyone who sends you a check and asks you to return a portion—this is a classic fake check scam.

Research the Employer:

Before diving into any job offer, take a moment to do some online research. Search for the company or individual offering the position, and include terms like "scam," "review," or "complaint." This can help you uncover any negative experiences others may have had, ensuring your summer job search remains sunny and scam-free.

Question the Reviews:

Just as a summer breeze can be deceivingly cool, glowing success stories and testimonials might not be genuine. These accounts may not reflect typical experiences, and positive online reviews could be fabricated by fake profiles designed to lure you in.

Consult Trusted Sources:

Before making any decisions, take a break from the heat and discuss the job offer or business opportunity with someone you trust. A fresh perspective can help you identify potential red flags you might have missed.
