Scam Alert: Beware of QR Codes on Unexpected Packages
As summer wraps up and we gear up for the back-to-school season, it’s important to stay vigilant about scams, especially new ones that may show up at your door
Imagine this: You receive a package out of the blue, addressed to you, but you don’t remember ordering it. You may have many packages coming in as fall approaches. Inside, there’s a note saying it’s a gift, but no sender is mentioned. The note invites you to scan a QR code to find out who sent it or to get return instructions. Is it a pleasant surprise, or a potential scam?
What’s Really Going On?
While it might seem like a harmless gift, this could be a new twist on a “brushing scam” designed to steal your personal information. Scanning the QR code could send you to a fake website that asks for sensitive details…like your credit card number, bank information, or account passwords. It could even download malware onto your device, giving scammers access to your personal data.
What Should You Do?
- Don’t scan the QR code on any unexpected package from an unknown sender.
- If you did scan the code and entered your username, password, or other credentials, change your passwords immediately and enable two-factor authentication.
- Check your credit report to make sure no one is opening accounts in your name.
- Review your bank and credit card statements for any suspicious charges.
- Consider putting a fraud alert or credit freeze on your credit report for added protection.
- If you suspect identity theft, visit IdentityTheft.gov for guidance and a personalized recovery plan.
