Charity and Donation Fraud
12/02/2025
This Season, Make Sure Your Generosity Reaches Those in Need
The holidays inspire giving—but unfortunately, scammers take advantage of generosity by posing as fake charities. Protect your donations with these tips:
Know the Warning Signs:
- High-pressure tactics urging you to “donate now.”
- Requests for donations via gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or other non-traditional payment methods.
- Unfamiliar organizations or names that sound similar to real charities.
How to Give Safely:
- Research charities before giving. Use trusted sites like Charity Navigator or the BBB Wise Giving Alliance.
- Donate directly through the charity’s official website—never through links in unsolicited emails, texts, or social media messages.
- Ask for written information about the charity’s mission and how your donation will be used.
- Ask for examples. If a charity is helping the homeless, ask where and how the funds are being used.
- Checking to see if a charity is tax exempt through the IRS can help weed out scammers as well.
If you suspect a charity may be fraudulent, choose a different, reputable organization to ensure your generosity truly makes a positive impact.
